Chimney Sweeping FAQs
Have a question about chimney sweeping? Here are some of our most asked questions:
You should get your chimney swept at least once a year. If you burn wood or coal frequently, it’s recommended to sweep it every 3–6 months to prevent dangerous buildup.
A chimney sweep removes soot, creosote, and blockages that can cause chimney fires or carbon monoxide leaks. Regular cleaning improves safety and heating efficiency.
Burn only dry, seasoned wood and ensure proper ventilation. Avoid burning wet wood or rubbish, and have your chimney inspected and swept regularly.
Yes, even smokeless fuel can produce ash and deposits. Regular chimney sweeping is still necessary to maintain safe and efficient operation of your stove.
Signs your chimney needs cleaning include a strong smoky smell, reduced draft, black soot around the fireplace, or hearing animal activity (i.e birds) in the flue.
While you are not legally required to use a registered sweep, we would not advise attempting to clean your chimney yourself. It’s safer and more effective to hire a professional with the right tools and expertise. Depending on your insurance provider, a self-maintained chimney without a certificate could also be an issue in the event of a claim.
